Life, A Book with many Chapters

The idea of writing about my family intrigued me, tracing their history over 12 generations, and exploring how changes in religion affected the Sykes family from 1500 until today. How the changes in culture and the world around them challenged their faith. Did the times they were living in contribute in a positive or negative way to their faith, did they “walking in the way,” live a Christlike life. The challenge was interesting. The world is very different now and has changed a tremendous amount in those 500 years.
This is a snippet from Chapter 3 Victory Sikes II 1689-1749
We had supper early; it is the 12th of September 1749 in the new America as they say. We talked about one more buggy ride up to Springfield to sit on the Bench and maybe watch the sunset, before it’s very cold. I went to bed early. I just felt tired tonight. As I was falling asleep, I thought about Mary and the beginning, when it was just the two of us, how beautiful she was. I felt warm and knew that I was in the Lord’s hands. I thought if something should happen to me, I should ask the Lord to please give her peace and take care of her. I did ask, right then, “Lord bless Mary, please give her peace. Thank you for my time with her. I was so blessed to have her as my wife.” I was full of joy, not afraid. Sometime, somewhere in the quiet and long peaceful night, the Lord took my hand. I heard “well done”…. He does smile!
Mary King, Sikes, Harmon lived until May 8, 1769, and she remarried. The Lord blessed John Harmon with the rest of Mary’s life.
“Oh my Gosh!” Availble in the early summer of 2026 “good Lord willing”

This book “O MY GOSH!” will cover our walk with the Lord from 2017 until 2026. We have spoken in more that 300 churches of all denotations. The faces and the places we traveled too and especially the children, who we hope remember the stories and the words of the Lord we left with them. Because of the language one of the things, they seem to remember right away was my phrase “Oh my Gosh”. I use it way to often to express many things mostly Joy. I noticed they were trying to speak English and make me feel at home. I also realized that I wanted to leave them with memories from our visit that was more than just “Oh my Gosh pastor”. I decided to teach them a little English, and I thought that the verse from 1 John 4:4 was something that would give them confidence and strength to live in this broken world. I shorten it a little as it was a lot to learn in English the essence of the verse is what seemed important to teach them. “for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world”. Being an evangelist minister (pastor) is a lonely job. It is hard to have people to talk to about things in your life and about what you do. Then not being fluent in the language of Brazil, Portuguese, and having only one or maybe two people who speak English then being in the country for 8-10 months my world gets very small. Yes, I should have learned the language sooner and better, most things that cause us stress are self-inflicted. What I do is not a burden, it is a blessing for me. In spite of many difficulties of living in Brazil, all of them were made small by the love and joy of the CHILDREN, and some of the adults who treated us better than family, they are so happy to see us as we returned each year, they sincerely LOVE us. It is the children that give us so much joy and hope. In each service I speak directly to them and their smiles and kindness is so very hard to express in words, you needed to be there. Thru them, I can see in them what should always be the best in me, and by being like them I can and will serve the Lord better. I hope you find joy in our journey. The stories, pictures, and our effort to bring Glory to God, his Son Jesus Christ and the Spirit he has given to all of us who will ask for forgiveness, trusting in him.
“VISTA TO GLORY:” should be published and available in late March 2026

Painted in 1975, by Leigh Sykes in memory of Eleanor Pierce, the church where it began for me and where I learned from my sunday school teacher things that served me all my life. These things kept me looking and learning for the understanding of FAITH ALONE. She taught me things like Job 19:25 that inspired me to learn how I was going to see God, in the flesh with my eye. “Leigh I see it in you. You will go far and speak to many, about the Lord and your smile will bring glory to the Lord.” I was seven how did she know?
